The Marseille Cancer Research Center celebrates its 50th anniversary ! -
INTRODUCTION
Advances in developmental and stem cell biology has allowed to decipher the growth factors and signaling pathways necessary for a stem cell to receive proper environmental conditions to differentiate and arrange themselves to form a mini-organ in vitro. These three-dimensional (3D) structures called ‘’organoids’’ display similar functional properties of the tissue of origin including the genetic and the cellular heterogeneity, making them highly valuable tools to study tissue homeostasis and tumorigenesis.
GOAL
– The use of this three-dimensional culture system to model developmental processes in normal and disease states.
– To recapitulate early stage of cancer formation and to create new cellular models of tumor directly from patient biopsies which represent the cellular and genetic heterogeneity of cancer better than any immortalized cell lines.
– To functionally test the pathways by which given cells participate in tissue maintenance and remodelling, to dissect the mechanisms underlying tumorigenesis and to test drug response in different cancers paving the way to personalized medicine.
